THIS Space 2020

At THIS Space we aim to be a friendly, safe and inclusive environment for everyone.

Like our work, our events are defined by a highly inclusive approach that combines academic rigour with the real concerns of patients and staff. We’re open, transparent, and we do not shy away from difficult subjects. To create this environment we have developed a set of considerations to guide us through all aspects of the design and delivery of THIS Space:

  • Content and speaker selection representing a range of views and perspectives

  • Inclusive session formats in line with our Patients Included statement

  • Open to all participants, we will reach out to and invite diverse audiences across gender/ethnicity/level of seniority/lived experience balanced

  • Implementing our code of conduct throughout the live event programme

THIS Space values the participation of all our speakers and attendees and we want you to enjoy the event.

Patients Included

At THIS Space, we welcome researchers, patients, carers, NHS staff and anyone with an interest in the evidence base for improving the quality and safety of healthcare. In order to make sure the event incorporates the experience of patients as experts in living with their condition while ensuring they are neither excluded nor exploited, we’re using the Patients Included conference charter as a framework for our planning process.Below, we outline what we’re doing across the five clauses of the charter to ensure THIS Space is accessible, equitable and meaningful for patient and carer participants.

  • Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference’s central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.

  • Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.

  • Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or carers participating in the advertised programme are paid in full, in advance. Scholarships are provided by the conference organisers to allow patients or carers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates.

  • The disability requirements of participants are accommodated. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other programme elements are open to patient delegates.

  • Access for virtual participants is facilitated, with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.
